Hypergammon: The Fast Backgammon Variant With Only 3 Checkers
Published on May 26, 2026 · Updated on July 6, 2026
Hypergammon is a radically shortened backgammon variant: instead of the usual 15 checkers, each player has only 3 checkers. The basic rules are identical to classic backgammon setup – only the number of checkers and their starting position differ.
The Hypergammon starting position
Each player’s three checkers start on the 24-, 23-, and 22-point (from that player’s perspective). This makes the game noticeably more open and contact-heavy from the very start compared to the classic 15-checker game.
Why is Hypergammon so fast?
With only three checkers, a game is decided within a few moves – a round often takes just a couple of minutes. At the same time, dice luck has a much bigger influence on the outcome than in the classic game, since fewer checkers mean fewer ways to strategically offset an unlucky roll. If you enjoy backgammon dice theory, Hypergammon is a variant where individual rolls carry disproportionately more weight.
Who is Hypergammon suited for?
Hypergammon is great for a quick game on the side, or as a fast addition to longer sessions of classic backgammon. In online tournaments, the variant is occasionally offered as a quick side event alongside the classic game.
