Acey-Deucey: The American Backgammon Variant

Acey-deucey is a backgammon variant especially popular in the United States – its popularity is largely traced back to the US Navy, where it was traditionally played a lot.
How acey-deucey differs from classic backgammon
Unlike classic backgammon setup, where both players start with a fixed starting position, acey-deucey begins with a completely empty board. Checkers are entered one at a time, similar to re-entering from the bar in the classic game.
The special rule: rolling 1-2
The game is named after the roll of 1-2 (ace-deuce, “acey-deucey”). If you roll this combination, a special rule applies:
- You first play the 1 and the 2 as rolled.
- You then get to choose any doubles you like and play that as well.
- After that, it’s your turn again and you roll once more.
A roll of 1-2 can therefore lead to a very strong combined move with an extra roll on top – a significant tactical difference from the classic game.
Why is acey-deucey interesting?
Because checkers enter the board gradually and because of the special rule for the 1-2 roll, a game of acey-deucey often plays out more dynamically and less predictably than classic backgammon. If you’re already familiar with backgammon strategy, acey-deucey offers an entertaining change of pace with its own tactical subtleties.
