Play Backgammon online
Published on March 20, 2026
Backgammon not only inspires young and old, it is a board game that can be played at any time. Playing backgammon online is therefore the ideal way to prove your skills and win one or two euros.
There are different ways to play backgammon on the internet, from flash games, to modern HTML5 applications in multiplayer mode, to Java applets that are loaded in the browser. Many online backgammon platforms offer their own application, which you download and install on your computer.
Backgammon Platforms
The HTML5 backgammon game is provided free of charge and can be played directly in the browser. If you want to play backgammon as a multiplayer game with other players for money, platforms such as Gameduell or Backgammon Galaxy are suitable. These are also free of charge, but also offer the possibility to fill up a user account with money and then play backgammon for money.
What is HTML5, and why is it needed for backgammon?
HTML5 is a markup technology, established for some years now, that defines how a website or web application is built and how it behaves in the browser. It replaced the long-time standard for online games, Flash, which required a browser plugin to display. Flash allowed elaborate animations and game logic that browsers didn’t originally support natively, but as the open web moved toward working across all kinds of devices (smartphones, tablets, desktops), Flash was declared outdated and its content can now only be shown with explicit user consent. Open formats based on HTML5 have taken over instead. One challenge is keeping the same state across a multiplayer application — HTML5 itself is only the display layer; a game server and controller in the backend synchronize game state between players.
What is the difference between backgammon single player and multiplayer with HTML5?
The HTML5 backgammon game offered here is a single-player game in the proper sense — you play it in the browser against the computer. A screen or tablet can of course also be used by two people in the same location. If you want to play a multiplayer game across different locations, synchronized over the internet, online backgammon is the better fit.

Understanding and applying backgammon rules in online backgammon
Many backgammon platforms place the checkers in the correct starting position automatically, so you don’t need to worry about the setup and arrangement of the checkers yourself. If you play on a physical backgammon board, for example a wooden backgammon set, you need to know the setup and have a basic understanding of the rules. The same rules apply to online backgammon — the computer just handles some things for you, e.g. you can’t make illegal moves, and the checkers are automatically reset when a game ends.
