The Golden Point in Backgammon

The “golden point” in backgammon refers to your own 5-point — the fifth point in your home board, counting from where your opponent’s checkers start. It’s considered one of the most valuable points on the entire board, even ahead of your own bar point.

Why this point specifically?

The 5-point sits deep enough in your home board that opposing checkers coming from the bar, or still far back, can only reach it with specific dice combinations. Occupying it early with two or more of your own checkers denies your opponent a key building block for their own blockade, while also making it harder for them to bring checkers into their home board.

When should you play for the golden point?

Especially in the opening, moving to your own 5-point is often the strongest option whenever the roll allows it (for example with a 3-1 or 6-4 straight from the starting position). Securing the golden point early gives you a clear structural advantage for the rest of the game — partly because it forms the basis for a later priming strategy.

How it works with other tactics
