Courage to Attack in Backgammon: When Should You Attack in the Opening?

Besides securing your own points, hitting an opponent’s checker early is the other major option in the opening. An attack always exposes your own checker in turn – the skill lies in recognizing when that risk is worth taking.

When is an early attack worth it?

When your opponent offers an exposed checker (a blot). A single opponent checker on a point can be hit and has to re-enter from the bar. If your roll lets you reach it, attacking is usually the stronger choice over simply building a point.

When you already control central points. If you already hold your own 5-point or the bar point, you can take an attack without endangering your own structure – even if your opponent hits you back, your position stays intact.

When should you wait instead?

When your own checkers are still exposed. An attack that leaves your checker far from safety, without backup from other checkers, can easily backfire – your opponent hits back, and your checker has to start over from the bar.

When your opponent is already well positioned. If your opponent holds several central points such as their own 5- or 7-point, an attack in that area often runs straight into a blockade. In that case, it’s usually better to consolidate your own position first and wait for a better opportunity.

Striking the right balance

A well-timed attack can provide a decisive edge; a careless one can put your entire game at risk. The basic rule: an attack is worth it when its benefit (time lost for your opponent, points you already hold) outweighs the risk of being hit yourself.
